One of Melinda’s bucket list items was seeing the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, KY. As skeptical as I am, I have to admit this was impressive. The sheer magnitude of just building this replica is overwhelming. To think it was done thousands of years ago without power tools and computer generated blueprints in almost beyond belief. The technical aspects alone were engineering marvels. From the recreations here, the Ark had automatic feeders and waters, cages that automatically remove animal waste, ventilation systems, rain water capture systems, multiple hulls.
I was raised hard core Baptist by my mother and not once did I ever hear about Noah taking dinosaurs on his little cruise. I’m not saying he did or didn’t, but they handled it well in the recreation. The park has numerous videos and presentations besides touring its namesake. Besides touring the ship, we did the VR flight that takes you back in time to see the Ark before it was finished. It was cute, but I don’t know if I would mark the VR as a must-do. We also watched a 30 minute video at the end of the day that documented the massive undertaking of building the park. I dare say it didn’t begin to cover the immensity of the task. If you ever built a home, just multiply that complexity several thousand times. We also ate at the buffet and it was a reasonable deal. A shuttle bus picks you up in the parking lot and takes you to the entrance. It was about $50/head to get in, $15 for lunch, $15 for the VR experience, and $15 to park. Throw in a couple of bottled waters and round it up to $100/person. That being said, I think it was still worth it. I would suggest going during the week to avoid crowds.
This blog article can’t convey the impact of this thing. It’s like taking pictures of the Grand Canyon or the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. Pictures just don’t cut it.
They say that touring the Ark and the park takes more than one day and I would have to agree with them. Melinda went to the Creation Museum (a different property, but the same venture) on Saturday and we toured the Ark park (I have been dying to say that!) on Monday and she is going back again to check out some things she missed. Our primary mission on this trip is to find new adventures. YOLO. I think that this is a definite winner. It didn’t hurt that they had a carousel for all the (young at heart) people that vacillate between 3rd grade and 80 yrs old to ride. Animals two-by-two, go figure.
