Scariest Tunnels in America!
We exit Virginia May 31st and head across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. This was voted the scariest bridge/tunnel in America. There are three bridge segments totaling 17 miles (across a section of Atlantic Ocean) bisected by two 1 mile tunnels. The tunnels go 100 feet BELOW the Atlantic Ocean. Maximum measurements for a vehicle are 8’6″ wide and 13’6″ tall. Our RV is 12’6″ tall but exactly 8’6″ wide. The bridge is sometimes 2 lanes. Yikes! Not for the faint of heart. You’re supposed to be able to drive it in 20 minutes but we gave ourselves plenty of time to inch through it.
Lewes/Cape May Ferry
If the bridges/tunnels combos were not scary enough, 3 hours later, we take the 40′ RV and 22′ foot cargo trailer across the Cape May/Lewes Ferry. Again the maximum height is 13’6″ and 8’6″ wide. It’s not cheap, but it shaves about 100 miles off our trip. You have to make an appointment and the timing and scheduling of all this is like playing Operation. One misstep and BZZZZ!
Atlantic City or Bust. (Please NOT Bust!)
After the Cape May Ferry, we drive an hour to Mays Landing, just west of Atlantic CIty. Melinda is planning some trips to visit her boss’s house and some relatives. I intend to decompress for the next two weeks at the Borgata poker room.
So, in order for us to get to New Jersey, we traveled OVER LAND to Chesapeake Bay, OVER WATER across the Chesapeake Bay bridges, UNDER WATER through the tunnels, ON THE WATER on the Cape May Ferry, and then back OVER LAND to get to Mays Landing. All we’re missing is an orbital maneuver and we’ll have done it all, just to get to New Jersey!
