Underground swinging bridge in Hidden River Cave in Horse Cave, KY

Our travels once again brought us to Cave City, KY, which is south central Kentucky, near Bowling Green  and Mammoth Caves. Having done Mammoth Caves and The Lost Caves (underground river cave & boat ride – my favorite) last year, we decided that our latest adventure would be Hidden River Cave. It is UNDER downtown Horse Cave, KY. Right under the main street. Now granted there is 200′ feet of solid rock between you and the traffic above, but still…

A tour guide takes a group of about 20 down into the cave. It’s a little cool but too bad this time of year. You will get a little damp from (drainage) drops from the cave roof as you go in. You go down in to the caves as he describes how frequent floods keep the cave from forming stalactites and stalagmites. You walk about a half mile down into the caves and see three different dome formations and cross the world’s largest (and ONLY) underground swinging bridge. You cross over the underground river and then turn around and come back. The half mile back has some ‘challenging’ climbs up stairs that will take your breath away and not in a good way.

They let us take Gizmo but the path was muddy enough and there were too many opportunities for him to go ‘rogue’ that Melinda carried him the whole way. I wouldn’t recommend taking your fur-baby. I also wouldn’t recommend taking children as they will ask a LOT of questions and make the tour seem like forever. But that may just be me.

It was fun, affordable, and we can now check that off our list as DONE.
